Bird in Paradise
Bird in Paradise, Original Oil Painting
by Jewish Home Resident Grace Freedman
Meet the artist. Like the Jewish Home, Grace Freedman was born in Boyle Heights. She fondly recalls the shops, restaurants, theater, and park on Brooklyn Avenue, and the Breed Street Shul where she worshipped with her family. Grace has always loved classical music and took piano lessons during her childhood. To this day, she remembers playing Beethoven's Pathetique Sonata. Attending Music Appreciation classes with Joel Lish, who plays the viola and is a music historian, is one of her favorite activities at the Home. After moving here six year ago, Grace decided to try her hand at painting. "I like working with colors, and enjoy painting landscapes and florals," she says. "It relaxes me." Grace volunteers in the library and synagogue, where she is an "ark angel," assisting the rabbi with opening the ark during Shabbat services. "I love the opportunities we have here at the Home," says Grace. "It's an ideal place to live."
