Survivor: Ernest Braunstein

Ernest Braunstein was walking back to his barracks at the Bor labor camp, in Yugoslavia, when he spotted a man suspended from a post by his wrists, which had been tied tightly behind the man’s back. He had passed out, and Ernest brought him water. A guard, witnessing the interaction, gave Ernest the same punishment. When Ernest blacked out from the pain, the guard lowered him, revived him and hung him again, repeatedly. After three hours, Ernest estimates, he was sent back to his barracks, where his friends surreptitiously fed him until he recovered. To this day, he can lift his right arm only to his shoulder. Read more

A century of love and care celebrated at Los Angeles Jewish Home

RESEDA - On a wall inside the Los Angeles Jewish Home, photographs tell the story of a century of love and care. "There's a fantastic, rich history here with a wealth of personal stories," said Christopher Muniz, who created an installation that illustrates the Jewish Home's past, present and future through dozens of still photographs and digital images. The whole installation is shaped into a six-pointed star. "It's a constellation of their history, the sum of all of the Jewish values within the Star of David," he said. The artwork was unveiled Sunday at the Eisenberg Campus of the Jewish Home on Victory Boulevard and can be viewed by the public today. It's unveiling kicks off a yearlong series of events at the home, which is celebrating its centennial birthday. Read more
