Program Overview

The Annenberg School of Nursing's (ASN) curriculum provides students with the knowledge and skills necessary to pass their licensing examination and begin working as a licensed vocational nurse.

With LVN licensure, you may work in a medical office, clinic, HMO, acute care hospital, long-term care facility, or other healthcare setting.

ASN offers students a comprehensive course of study in the science of nursing. Core subjects include:

• Anatomy and Physiology
• Pharmacology
• Fundamentals of Nursing
• Medical-Surgical Nursing
• Maternal-Child Nursing
• Supervision

Students also learn direct care, nursing process, assessment, diagnostic measurements, procedures, and treatments.

Training at ASN prepares vocational nursing students to take the National Council Licensing Examination for Practical Nurse (NCLEX-PN), which meets the standards set by the Board of Vocational Nursing and Psychiatric Technicians (BVNPT).

Classes meet Monday through Friday in a 12-month, full-time program consisting of 1041 hours of clinical instruction and 639 hours of theory (1680 hours total).

The Annenberg School of Nursing's program is divided into four terms of approximately twelve weeks in length. Each term is comprised of prescribed subjects that build upon the previous term's learning.

Classes are taught in an interactive format, combining classroom instruction with hands-on practice.

Upon graduation, all students are thoroughly prepared to take the NCLEX-PN exam, qualifying for entry-level employment as licensed vocational nurses. Completion of the program is acknowledged by the awarding of a diploma.

Vocational nursing salaries range from approximately $18 to $22 per hour depending on place of employment, and whether positions are 'benefitted' or 'non-benefitted.'

Facilities

The Annenberg School of Nursing includes a classroom, skills lab, computer lab, library and student lounge. School facilities and equipment comply with all federal, state, and local ordinances and regulations, including those related to fire safety, building safety and health.

Accreditation

Annenberg School of Nursing is accredited by the Board of Vocational Nursing and Psychiatric Technicians (BVNPT).

Approval to Operate

Bureau for Private Postsecondary and Vocational Education (BPPVE).

Faculty

The faculty is approved by the Board of Vocational Nursing and Psychiatric Technicians (BVNPT) and all possess advanced degrees. Faculty has strong professional and academic qualifications.

• Marie Fagan, MN, RN — Director

  Director Marie Fagan has been involved in vocational nursing for ten years. Prior to Annenberg School of Nursing, Fagan held positions as director of both Casa Loma College, Van Nuys campus, and American Career College, Los Angeles campus. She holds both bachelor's and master's degrees in nursing from the University of Phoenix. Fagan's clinical background includes geriatrics, medical surgical, and psychiatric nursing. Nursing is a second career for Fagan, who worked for seventeen years in the banking industry.

• Karol Stein, BSN, RN — Assistant Director

  Assistant Director Karol Stein holds a bachelor's degree in nursing from Pacific Union College. She has been licensed as a registered nurse since 1970 and has worked as a renal nurse, consultant, entrepreneur, and teacher. Stein has traveled extensively and worked abroad as a nurse.

• David Cooper, MS (Ed), LVN — Instructor

  Instructor David Cooper holds a master's degree in Instructional Leadership in Educational Administration and is licensed in vocational nursing and as a California Nursing Home Administrator. He served ten years with the United States Army Medical Corps. Cooper has worked previously as a health care administrator, psychiatric administrator, public school teacher, and has taught at several vocational nursing schools.

    Admissions Coordinator/Administrative Assistant Cindy Thomas holds a bachelor's degree in business management from San Jose State University. Her background includes work in the Autistic Program of the Conejo Valley School District.
